Syncerus caffer aequinoctialis, the Nile Buffalo was named by Edward Blyth in 1866.
The name ‘aequinoctialis’ means “of the equator”. This buffalo is especially black in colour and have much smaller horns and virtually no boss.
The horns tend to turn upright, without the ‘drop’ so often associated with the Cape Buffalo. Physically in size, this buffalo is also somewhat smaller than its cousin!
